Frequently Asked Questions
What to expect during the initial assessment will vary between Consultants and they will all be very flexible and adapt the appointment to work best for the young person and/or as the parents feel is most beneficial.
As a basic guideline, they will all want to talk directly to both the young person and the parents individually for part of assessment (doesn’t have to be without other in the room). They will want to know the young person’s thoughts on why they are there, their thoughts/behaviours/physical difficulties, why they behave/feel the way they do, what may have caused the difficulties etc. They will ask the parents similar questions. They will ask for a brief developmental history. A possible physical examination in relevant cases. They will ask what you would like the outcome of the initial assessment to be. They will discuss further assessments/treatments that we can offer and why they feel it may be beneficial to proceed with them.
